Cholesterol Treatment

Let’s Explore Cholesterol

You may be aware that cholesterol is one of today’s leading health issues, often overlooked until it’s too late. Cholesterol is a chemical present in every cell of the body and is essential for life. While the liver naturally produces cholesterol, it can also come from the foods we consume. Lipoproteins, specialized particles, carry cholesterol through the bloodstream. Maintaining a proper balance of cholesterol is crucial for overall health.

Cholesterol typically has no symptoms and can only be diagnosed through blood tests known as lipid profiles or lipid panels. These tests measure total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. It’s generally recommended to fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test, though some physicians may not require fasting.

At Evolve Family Medicine, we emphasize the importance of regular cholesterol screening and provide comprehensive care to help you manage your cholesterol levels effectively.

Treatment and Management of High Cholesterol

Lifestyle modifications, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, are always recommended and are the most effective ways to combat high cholesterol. However, medications may become necessary if you do not see improvements despite these changes. The choice of medication depends on several factors, including your overall health, age, and potential side effects. Common options may include:

The cholesterol you consume is absorbed by your small intestine and then released into your bloodstream. Ezetimibe (Zetia) lowers blood cholesterol levels by preventing dietary cholesterol from being absorbed. It can also be used in combination with a statin medication for enhanced effectiveness.

Statins work by blocking the chemical your liver needs to produce cholesterol, resulting in your liver filtering more cholesterol from your blood. Available statins include fluvastatin (Lescol), atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Altoprev), pravastatin (Pravachol), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and pitavastatin (Livalo). However, statins can have side effects such as memory loss, confusion, increased blood sugar, fatigue, muscle pain, and even muscle damage. Therefore, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication to avoid potential health complications.

At Evolve Family Medicine, we recommend treatments based on your age, severity of your condition, lipid profile, and medical history. Since medication tolerance varies from person to person, self-medication is not advisable for high cholesterol or any related issues. Ignoring high cholesterol can lead to serious consequences, such as stroke or heart attack, due to fat deposits in blood vessels. Proper treatment and timely intervention are essential for maintaining heart health and overall well-being.
