1. Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors

The cholesterol you consume is absorbed by your small intestine and then released into your bloodstream. Ezetimibe (Zetia) lowers blood cholesterol levels by preventing dietary cholesterol from being absorbed. It can also be used in combination with a statin medication for enhanced effectiveness.

2. Statin

Statins work by blocking the chemical your liver needs to produce cholesterol, resulting in your liver filtering more cholesterol from your blood. Available statins include fluvastatin (Lescol), atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Altoprev), pravastatin (Pravachol), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and pitavastatin (Livalo). However, statins can have side effects such as memory loss, confusion, increased blood sugar, fatigue, muscle pain, and even muscle damage. Therefore, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional before starting any medication to avoid potential health complications.
