Annual Physical

What to Expect from an Annual Physical

You may be familiar with the annual physical exam, which is crucial for early detection and awareness of medical issues. This exam is essential for identifying diseases and health problems before they escalate, even when no symptoms are apparent. The main goals of an annual physical are to provide primary prevention, identify risk factors for related diseases, update clinical information, offer patient counseling, promote healthy habits, and review vaccination status. Regular annual physicals can help reduce the likelihood of developing serious or complex health conditions later in life.

What We Assess During an Annual Physical Exam

1. History

During the annual physical exam, we review your complete medical history and discuss any factors that could affect your health. We will ask questions about your alcohol use, smoking habits, lifestyle activities, exercise routines, diet, and sexual health.

Additionally, we update you on your vaccination status and recommend preventive measures based on your lifestyle and health habits.

2. General Exam

At a glance, we assess your general appearance to gain insights into your health. This includes evaluating the condition of your eyes, memory, skin, and signs of fatigue. These observations can provide valuable clues about your overall medical condition.

3. Indications

We monitor key vital signs including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. For example, if your blood pressure exceeds 120 over 80, it may indicate hypertension, and we will provide guidance on managing and addressing this condition.

4. Lung Exam

During a lung exam with a stethoscope, we listen for wheezes, crackles, or reduced breath sounds. These findings can provide important clues about potential lung diseases and other respiratory complications.

5. Heart Exam

We use a stethoscope to detect heart murmurs and irregular heartbeats, which can signal potential heart disease or other cardiovascular issues.

6. Neck and Head Exam

During the exam, you may be asked to open your mouth to assess issues related to the throat, such as problems with the tonsils. We also evaluate the condition of your gums and teeth. Additionally, we examine the nose, ears, eyes, sinuses, lymph nodes, carotid arteries, and thyroid to ensure comprehensive health assessment.

7. Neurological and Dermatological Exam

We assess muscle strength, nerve function, reflexes, mental state, and balance to evaluate your neurological health. Additionally, changes in your nails and skin can provide important clues about dermatological issues.

8. Abdominal Exam

We assess the presence of abdominal fluid and liver size by gently tapping the abdomen. Using a stethoscope, we also listen for bowel sounds. An abdominal exam is essential for identifying serious issues that could affect your overall health.

9. Female Physical Exam

For female physical exams, we may conduct a breast exam and a pelvic exam. These examinations allow us to assess breast health and evaluate the vulva, cervix, vagina, ovaries, and uterus for any potential issues.

10. Male Physical Exam

For a male annual exam, we perform a testicular exam to check for tenderness, lumps, or changes in size that could indicate a risk of testicular cancer. We also conduct a hernia exam as part of the physical examination. Additionally, we may examine the penis for signs of STIs, such as ulcers or warts. A prostate exam is performed by gently inserting a finger to assess the size and condition of the prostate.
