Everything You Should Know About Eczema and Skin Condition
Eczema refers to a group of skin conditions characterized by irritation and inflammation, leading to itchy and dry patches on the skin. The most common form is atopic eczema, affecting about 10 to 20 percent of infants and 3 percent of children and adults in the U.S.
Common symptoms include rashes, dry and cracked skin, red and leathery patches, and inflammation. The various types of eczema include atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, neurodermatitis, nummular eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and stasis dermatitis.
How to Diagnose Eczema?
To diagnose your specific eczema-related concerns, we may ask you a series of questions. These include:
- What is the best way to add moisture to my skin? Should I use over-the-counter remedies, or do I need a prescription?
- Should I use specific laundry detergents, lotions, or soaps? Do sensitive skin or fragrance-free products make a difference?
- Are there any foods I should avoid to prevent flare-ups?
- Are there certain materials I should avoid wearing?
- Do pets make my symptoms worse?
- Can I exercise if sweating aggravates my condition?
- What should I do if my symptoms persist, or if I scratch and develop an infection?
- Can stress trigger flare-ups?
- Is it common to experience extended periods without symptoms?
- Are there any treatments I can use to reduce the risk of future flare-ups?
We will guide and consult you based on your responses. It’s important to address these questions, as eczema does not have a single definitive diagnosis.

What Causes and Triggers Eczema?
The exact cause of eczema is not fully understood, but a family history of the condition can increase your likelihood of developing it. Eczema can be triggered by various factors, including rough or coarse fabrics, extreme temperatures, certain soaps or detergents, animal dander, respiratory infections, stress, or even sweaty, itchy skin.
What Are the Possible Treatment Options?
There are several ways to treat eczema, depending on the severity of your symptoms. For milder cases, you’ll likely be advised to use specific creams and moisturizers. If your inflammation is more severe, ointments may be recommended. Products containing lactic acid, glycerin, or urea can also help soothe the irritation and inflammation caused by eczema.
If your symptoms don’t improve with ointments, we may prescribe medications after thoroughly assessing your condition. Additional treatments may include phototherapy or the use of cyclosporine. However, we strongly advise against taking any medication without first discussing your medical history and undergoing a proper evaluation.
