Birth Control Management
What Exactly Is Birth Control? A Comprehensive Overview
Couples often consider various factors before choosing a contraceptive method. Birth control is not a simple decision, and those who weigh aspects like effectiveness, safety, affordability, and acceptability may find themselves reconsidering their options. It's important to choose a method that aligns with your lifestyle and health needs.
If you're seeking effective birth control management to prevent pregnancy, you've come to the right place. At Evolve Family Medicine, we understand the complexities of selecting the right contraceptive method. We provide a range of successful and effective options tailored to meet your specific needs, ensuring you have the best possible support in managing your reproductive health. Let us help you make informed decisions about your birth control and achieve peace of mind.
Birth Control Options
Birth control methods include a range of hormonal and non-hormonal options:
Intrauterine contraception
- LNG IUD: A device placed inside the uterus that releases small amounts of progestin to prevent pregnancy.
- Copper T IUD: A non-hormonal device placed inside the uterus that can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years.
Hormonal methods
- Implants: A thin rod containing progestin inserted under the skin of the upper arm, preventing pregnancy for around 3 years.
- Injections: Given every three months in the arm or buttocks; these shots release progestin to prevent pregnancy.
- Oral contraceptives (the pill): Containing progestin and estrogen (or progestin-only), taken daily as prescribed.
- Patches: Worn on the upper body, buttocks, or lower abdomen; a new patch is applied once a week for three weeks, followed by a patch-free week.
Barrier methods
- Diaphragm or Cervical Cap: These devices are inserted into the vagina to cover the cervix, preventing sperm from entering the uterus.
- Contraceptive Sponge: This sponge contains spermicide and is placed in the vagina. It can be effective for about 24 hours and should be left in place for at least six hours after intercourse before being removed and discarded as per doctor's advice.
- Male Condoms: Worn by men, these prevent sperm from entering the partner's body during intercourse.
- Female Condoms: Worn by women, these prevent sperm from entering the body.
- Spermicides: These substances kill sperm and come in various forms, including film, cream, gel, foam, tablet, or suppository. They should be placed in the vagina less than an hour before intercourse.
At Evolve Family Medicine, we help you understand these options and choose a method that fits your health and goals. We provide prescriptions and ongoing management for many hormonal methods (such as the pill, patch, and injections) and offer guidance on barrier methods. For IUDs and implants, we can discuss your options and coordinate referral to a specialist for placement when appropriate.
